Very random stuff from a Geek

I know, I'm late posting this. I probably should have posted it right after the Hugo Awards ceremony, but here are my thoughts on the Hugo Awards this year.

The best short story, novelette, novella, and novel all went to the nominees that I voted for. Best short story went to The Water that Falls on you from Nowhere by John Chu. Best novelette went to The Lady Astronaut of Mars by Mary Robinette Kowal. Best novella went to Equoid by Charles Stross. Best novel went to Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. All were excellent stories. I think my favorite of these winners was The Lady Astronaut of Mars.

Ancillary Justice was kind of military SF, which I'm not normally all that big of a fan of, but it incorporated some concepts that made it really interesting, including the main character who was a ship with intelligence and multiple ancillaries, reanimated dead people who are linked to the ship and serve as a sort of security force, and serve as an extension of the ship's intelligence. The main group of people in the book also don't differentiate between genders, and always use the feminine pronouns for both males and females.

Equoid was an extremely creepy story about unicorns, but not your normal unicorns. They are Lovecraftian horrors! It was also fairly humorous.

I only vaguely remember The Lady Astronaut of Mars and The Water that Falls on you from Nowhere. I don't really remember the details well enough to do descriptions, but certain parts are stuck in my head.

In other categories, Gravity won best dramatic presentation long form, which kind of annoyed me since it wasn't really Science Fiction or Fantasy. In best dramatic presentation short form, the Game of Thrones episode The Rains of Castamere won over all of the Doctor Who episodes and related specials. Lightspeed Magazine won best Semiprozine, SF Signal Podcast won best fancast, and Ellen Datlow of Tor.com won best editor short form. The rest of the winners can be found at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/08/announcing-the-2014-hugo-award-winners.

The winners of the 1939 Retro Hugo Awards can be found at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/08/announcing-the-winners-of-the-1939-retro-hugo-awards. I'm not familiar with most of the winners. The only one I'm familiar with was War of the Worlds by the Mercury Theatre on the Air/Orson Welles.

Last night I finished re-watching the 2008 cartoon of Spectacular Spider-Man! I loved it just as much the second time as I did the first time. It was an amazing cartoon, which is to be expected, since it was made by Greg Weisman, creator of Gargoyles and the Young Justice cartoon. I think it is probably in my top 10 favorite comic book cartoons.

I'm kind of wondering if I had seen the last few episodes when it originally aired. I didn't remember seeing them before when I saw them. Most of the other episodes I did vaguely remember seeing before.

I highly recommend watching Spectacular Spider-Man if you haven't already checked it out. It is available as a complete series set on Blu-ray. I also recommend following Greg Weisman on twitter if you have a twitter account. His user name is @Greg_Weisman. He is currently working on the new Star Wars cartoon "Star Wars: Rebels".

I am once again attempting to get back into blogging. I've attempted it a few times on Blogger and Tumblr, but I always end up giving up after a couple of days. I can't say for sure if it will hold this time or not, but I'm going to give it my best. I really hope it turns out better than previous attempts. I'm not going to attempt to make a set subject matter like I did in previous attempts to restart my blogging habit. It will just be a general purpose blog.

It is going to take some getting used to. I'm not used to writing more than a sentence or two any more. My grammar is also fairly bad. I'm going to attempt to pick up a book on writing for blogs, and maybe a grammar book too. And I hope with practice, I'll get better.

Wish me luck.

Today I was sitting in the car, and I decided to check Facebook, and got quite the surprise. I found out that Robin Williams had died. At first I thought it was just one of those false alarms, but then I saw that a lot of people were posting about him. One of the people posted a link to a news article, so I opened it up, and sure enough, he had committed Suicide.

Robin Williams was one of the greatest comedic actors of all time! He was the voice of Genie on the Disney animated classic movie Aladdin, Peter Pan on Hook, the lead on Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji, Mork and Mindy, Bicentennial Man (which I enjoyed despite negative critical reception), and many others.

His life was cut short, but he will live on forever in his movie and television roles, and in the hearts of fans past, present, and future. I will miss him.

My movie ratings are just rating how much I enjoy the movies, not how good they are as art or political commentary or anything else. I will rate movies that are badly written, acted, filmed, etc a good rating if I enjoy them, and the opposite is also true. I also reserve the right to up the rating of a movie I like more after multiple viewings. As of now I'm saying there is no lowering ratings though (I might change my rules later on).

North by Northwest (1959): This is a thriller directed by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock about a man who gets mistaken for a government agent. I really enjoyed it, and I liked it more than The Birds, but not as much as Psycho or Vertigo. 4 out of 5 stars.

Them! (1954): This was a very good movie about giant irradiated ants. One interesting thing about this movie is that, while most of the movie was in black and white, the opening title was in color (red against a black and white background). I really enjoyed it overall, though I wish there was some character development. All of the characters were very generic. 4 out of 5 stars.

I picked up Metroid: Other M yesterday. I'm really enjoying it so far. It does have some really goofy story flaws to it involving how you get your upgrades. That is a minor problem that I can live with easily though. I do have 2 major problems with the game. The first is that enemies don't drop health. Truthfully that just makes it more of a challenge, but it's an annoyance. The other problem is a lot bigger, and is almost game breaking. I refer to the fact that you have to point the Wiimote at the screen and go into first person mode to shoot missiles. Half of the time I have trouble getting the Wiimote into the sensor bar's area. And when I do, it is never aimed right, so I have to struggle with moving the camera around to find my target. The lock on button that activates the missiles also is the button that moves the camera, which makes it even worse. The missile system can really screw you up during the boss battles, where you have to be fast.

While I am annoyed at those 2 problems, I do really like the game. I think it is a nearly perfect example of how a 3d Metroid game should be done.

I beat the main game (original Super Mario Bros) of Super Mario Bros Deluxe today from beginning to end using warps. I got to world 8 using my first set of lives, and then I used many continues on each level in world 8. World 8-2 I had the most trouble with. World 8-3 took a long time, but once I was finally able to get a fire flower I had an easy time of the level. The only trouble I had with 8-4 was the hammer brother that was right before King Koopa.

With my level of education, even the simplified explanation of string theory given in Nova's The Elegant Universe is confusing. I'm mostly by the "extra dimensions". I guess its about time that I get to work on learning my math and then physics. :P
